Dyed Pinecones

This simple holiday craft shows that you can dye more than fabric; all you need are some pinecones and dye. The finished pinecones will make a great addition to a holiday table setting, or Christmas tree ornaments.

Dyed Pinescones

Materials:

  • Tintex Fabric Dye that matches your seasonal decor
  • Pinecones (yes you can dye wood related items)
  • Rubber gloves
  • Measuring cup
  • Measuring spoons
  • Plastic or metal bowel/container
  • Optional: Hot glue gun & glue
  • Optional: glitter
  • Optional: glitter

Directions:

  1. Choose a suitable dyeing container (or use a stainless steel sink).
  2. Mix a small batch of dye with hot water until powder is completely dissolved.
  3. Add the pinecones to the dye bath, check them after a minute to see if you like the colour (leaving in longer will create darker or brighter colours).
  4. Allow to air dry.
  5. Optional: string pinecone decorations with metallic thread or ribbon to create 'country chic' tree decorations or use twine for a more rustic look.
  6. Optional: dress up the pinecones with creative touches like glitter, paint or ribbon. Style in wooden bowels as a tablescape centrepiece for a big Holiday dinner, tall clear glass containers, glued onto a wreath or on a fireplace mantel.
